Professional Mental Health Support
The choice to engage and debrief with a health professional is a personal decision. It is one that you can choose to keep private or share with a close few.
There have been instances where employers attempt to discredit employees who access the support of a health professional. It is why it is not always wise to share your decision to seek external support with your employer, but only you can discern that and decide for yourself.
Highly toxic employers will rely on the social stigma associated with mental health distress to further debilitate employees. More often than not, sadly so, these are the same employers who created the emotional distress to begin with, either through a toxic workplace culture or by permitting bullying in an employment context.
The other benefit of seeking support and advice from an external third party is known as contemporaneous evidence. Notes taken during the note taking process can be used to validate future legal claims, particularly in relation to Workers Compensation matters.
More information can be found on the Australian Government website. The program, referred to as a Mental Health Plan offers 20 free or highly subsidised sessions with a health professional, such as a counsellor or psychologist. The first step is to connect with your doctor and ask for more information.
